Идея, представленная в работе, выражается через антитезис методов познания и отношения к истине двух родственных культур — античной (аполлонической) и европейской (фаустовской). Вслед за О. Шпенглером предполагается, что в основе познания лежит понятие числа, различное в обозреваемых культурах. Статичное аполлоническое число (через наделение истины тем же свойством) заключает античные методы познания в строгие логические рамки, вынуждая мыслителя конструировать действительность через призму желаемого. Фаустовское же число, в какой-то степени, есть число аморфное, т. е. неопределенное, вызывает становление нового взгляда на мир, принадлежащего ученому-экспериментатору, которому свойственна процедура обратная — конструирование желаемого через действительное.

The idea presented in the work is expressed through the antithesis of the methods of cognition and attitudes toward truth in two related cultures — ancient (Apollonian) and European (Faustian). Following O. Spengler, it is proposed that the concept of number, which differs in the two cultures, underlies cognition. The static Apollonian number, by imbuing truth with the same property, confines ancient methods of cognition within a strict logical framework, forcing the thinker to construct reality through the prism of desire. Faustian number, on the other hand, is, to some extent, an amorphous number, that is, indefinite, evoking a new worldview, one that belongs to the experimental scientist, who employs the reverse process — constructing the desired through the actual.
